When it comes to skincare ingredients, aside from sunscreen, antioxidants are dermatologists’ top choice. They help neutralise free radicals in the body, slow down the aging process, keep the skin radiant, and protect the body from environmental damage. When your skin lacks antioxidants, it can become dull, dry, and more prone to fine lines. That’s why strengthening your antioxidant defences is the essential first step in anti-aging.
To understand antioxidants, we first need to know about “free radicals.” Free radicals are highly unstable molecules that attack surrounding healthy cells to stabilise themselves. Think of how a sliced apple turns brown when exposed to air. That is oxidation in action. Everyday factors such as UV exposure, air pollution, late nights, stress, and poor diet can all increase free radical production in the body. When free radicals accumulate, they damage collagen and elastic fibers in the skin, leading to loss of firmness, dullness, dryness, and eventually fine lines.
The key function of antioxidants is to neutralise these free radicals, reducing the damage they cause to cells. Maintaining strong antioxidant defences helps your skin resist external stressors, age more slowly, and keep the skin bright, firm, and healthy.
